The Mordecai Project – Empowering Women in Goma, Congo
Project 2:2 proudly supports The Mordecai Project’s Women’s Empowerment Center in Goma, Congo, addressing one of the most urgent humanitarian crises. Congo has been unofficially named the “rape capital of the world” due to widespread sexual violence, particularly during times of war. Many women have endured severe trauma without access to counseling or support.
Trauma Counseling (Healing): Many women in Congo have been victims of unspeakable violence and have never received counseling to address their deep trauma. The center provides professional counseling services to help women process and heal from the horrors they’ve faced.
Economic Empowerment (Growing): In October 2021, the center completed construction of a sewing center, offering women practical skills to start their own businesses and become financially independent. Sewing programs equip these women with the tools they need to create a sustainable livelihood for themselves and their families. Additionally, the center plans to launch a literacy program to further enhance the women’s skills and opportunities.
Community and Ministry Support (Protecting): The project goes beyond education, with conferences and spiritual support to empower not just women, but also men and pastors in the region, ensuring the community as a whole is uplifted. The center, dedicated in August 2022, serves as a beacon of hope, providing both practical skills and spiritual enrichment.
The Vision for Expansion
The Mordecai Project has greater plans for the future, including the construction of a school and daycare center to further empower women by providing them with opportunities to support their families while their children receive care and education. These initiatives are essential to breaking the cycle of oppression and enabling long-term community development.
Why We Chose to Support
Project 2:2 chose to support this project because it aligns perfectly with our mission to equip faith-based organizations that protect and uplift the vulnerable. The Women’s Empowerment Center addresses both the physical and spiritual needs of abused women, helping them regain their dignity, find healing, and build better futures. By empowering women, we believe this ministry is transforming entire communities for the better.
